New, renewal veteran ID cards now available through county

Published: June 5, 2017 3:50 PM

Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise CPA, CFE announces her office will issue new and renewal veteran identification cards at events throughout Summit County during the month of June. The card is similar in size and shape to a driver's license and can conveniently serve in place of the military discharge form DD214.

Fiscal Officer Scalise put Summit County in the lead when she implemented one of the first veteran identification card programs in the State of Ohio. The Fiscal Office officially unrolled the program on May 28, 2013, issuing 3,000 cards within the first year. Today, more than 6,000Summit County military veterans are card holders.

"I'm very proud to offer this program to our veterans," said Scalise. "The benefit it provides goes beyond the card itself. Veterans who apply for a card also record their military discharge papers. If anything should happen to their original papers, a copy is safely held for them at our office. By initiating the card program and taking it into our communities, we have increased awareness about the importance of recording these documents."

Cards issued prior to Sept. 8, 2016 expire after four years. Veterans who received their card in 2013 are eligible for a renewal card this year. The renewal process does not require veterans to present their military discharge papers. The Fiscal Office maintains a copy of their discharge papers from the initial card application. However, veterans are required to present their current Summit County veteran identification card or a proper form of identification displaying a photograph.

The adoption of HB 173 on Sept. 8, 2016 extended the four year expiration date to 10 years. Veterans who renew their card this year will be issued a card expiring in 2027. Fiscal Office staff will issue veteran identification cards at the following locations:
